by Dr Arshad S. Karim and Mehboob S. Karim (Authors)
This is the story of Mehbooba Shere–Ammi – a remarkable lady from Patna, Bihar, India. Ammi’s life and times were uniquely characteristic of the Indo-Pak subcontinent’s social and economic orders of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
The purpose of writing Ammi’s story is to present the characteristics of such a unique woman. Documenting her life and relationship with the world is essential because she experienced so many chapters in her short lifetime.
Interestingly, although she belonged to a wealthy Nawab family from her maternal side and the highly established Jaghirdar family on her father’s side, she ended up financially poor but remained rich in heart. With this biography of Ammi, we hope to show how and why her life story was so important. Ammi is a unique term we’ll use throughout this biographical sketch of her life because she preferred to be regarded as a mother to all around her (although she chose to be known as Bibi Baji to her cousins, nephews, and nieces – she wanted to remain youthful and friendly to all ages, the older and younger (generations).
