How to Calculate Eid Fitrana: A Guide from Save the People International

Eid Fitrana, also known as Zakat al-Fitr, is an important aspect of the Islamic faith. It is a charitable obligation given by Muslims before the Eid al-Fitr prayers at the end of Ramadan. Fitrana serves as a means of purification for the fasting individual and as a way to support those in need during the festive occasion of Eid. At Save the People International, we emphasize the importance of Fitrana and Zakat, especially in providing much-needed support to underprivileged communities. Our NGO, based in Ontario, Canada, collects Fitrana and Zakat and distributes them to those in need, including the underprivileged communities in Thar, Pakistan.

In this blog, we’ll guide you on how to calculate Eid Fitrana, why it matters, and how Save the People International uses these donations to make a difference.

Understanding Eid Fitrana

Eid Fitrana is a form of charity that is obligatory for every Muslim who can afford it. The purpose of Fitrana is twofold: it purifies the fasting person from any shortcomings during the month of Ramadan and allows those who are less fortunate to participate in the joys of Eid. This charity is meant to be given before the Eid prayer so that those in need can also celebrate the holiday with dignity.

Why Is Eid Fitrana Important?

Fitrana is an essential practice in Islam that ensures that no one is left behind during the celebration of Eid. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) instructed Muslims to give Fitrana so that the less fortunate could also experience the joy of Eid and partake in the festivities. This form of charity is unique in that it must be given in food or the equivalent value in money, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that everyone has their basic needs met.

At Save the People International, we recognize the importance of this tradition. Your contributions help us provide food, clothing, and other necessities to underprivileged communities, particularly in regions like Thar, Pakistan, where poverty and hunger are rampant. Your Fitrana donations help ensure that families who would otherwise go without can celebrate Eid with dignity and happiness.

How to Calculate Eid Fitrana

The calculation of Eid Fitrana is relatively straightforward but requires a basic understanding of Islamic teachings and local economic conditions. Fitrana is typically calculated based on the cost of staple food items in the local community, such as wheat, barley, dates, or raisins. The amount is generally the equivalent of one “sa'” (a traditional Islamic measure of volume) of these staple food items.

In modern terms, one “sa'” is roughly equal to 2.5 to 3 kilograms of food. The price of Fitrana is therefore based on the cost of 2.5 to 3 kilograms of staple food in your local area. For example, if the cost of 2.5 kilograms of wheat is $10 in your area, then the Fitrana for each person would be $10.

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to calculate Eid Fitrana:

Determine the Staple Food: The first step is to decide which staple food you want to base your Fitrana calculation on. In most cases, this will be wheat, barley, dates, or raisins. Some scholars also allow for the calculation to be based on rice or other staple foods that are common in your community.

Calculate the Quantity: The standard quantity for Fitrana is one “sa’,” which is approximately 2.5 to 3 kilograms of food. You need to calculate the cost of this quantity of the chosen staple food in your local area.

Check Local Prices: Once you have determined the quantity, check the current price of that amount of food in your local market. This can vary from year to year based on inflation, food supply, and other factors.

Set the Amount: Based on the current price, set the amount for Fitrana. For example, if 2.5 kilograms of wheat costs $12 in your local market, then $12 is the amount of Fitrana that should be given for each person in your household.

b: Fitrana must be paid for every member of the household, including children. Therefore, multiply the amount of Fitrana by the number of people in your family. For example, if the Fitrana amount is $12 and you have a family of five, the total Fitrana you need to pay is $60.

Practical Examples of Calculating Eid Fitrana

Let’s go through a practical example to clarify the process:

Scenario 1: Wheat-Based Fitrana

Cost of 2.5 kilograms of wheat: $10

Number of family members: 4

Total Fitrana: $10 x 4 = $40

Scenario 2: Rice-Based Fitrana

Cost of 2.5 kilograms of rice: $15

Number of family members: 5

Total Fitrana: $15 x 5 = $75

By following this method, you can accurately calculate how much Fitrana you need to give. It’s important to remember that Fitrana should be paid before the Eid prayer, ideally during the last few days of Ramadan. This ensures that the less fortunate receive the support they need in time for the Eid celebrations.
